IQPC Military Radar Conference

www.militaryradar2008.com

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to Defence IQ’s Military Radar 2008!

It’s a well known fact that radar technology offers today’s warfighter a critical advantage. With the ability to guide weapons more accurately, provide early warning of incoming threats and inform deployed forces of enemy positions, surveillance technology provides the mission-critical information that can ensure success and save lives at the front line. More than any other system at the military’s disposal, radar continues to evolve and enhance current and future operations.

However, the speed at which the technology is developing and the huge range of different applications that this makes possible, means that it is increasingly difficult for the defence community to keep abreast of the latest developments and exploit radar systems to their full potential.

Since 2004, Defence IQ has sought to close this gap by bringing together the military end-user community with senior scientists and leading defence industry figures working at the top end of the radar marketplace. This has provided the ideal opportunity to gain insights into key radar programmes currently under development, network with principle decision makers and understand how future radar technologies can deliver real improvements to military capability.

Keen to build on this success, we’re delighted at the opportunity to co-host Military Radar 2008 with the 11th European Microwave Week Conferences and Exhibition. With its central theme of “Bridging Gaps”, Defence IQ believes that co-locating with EuMW2008 and offering Military Radar 2008 delegates access to the European Radar Conference (EuRAD) and the European Microwave Exhibition offers the defence community an unprecedented opportunity to understand the full potential of radar technology.

In addition to Military Radar 2008’s own mix of keynote presentations, interactive discussion sessions, extended workshops and opportunities to network, delegates can attend focused sessions and workshops delivered by leading technical experts and endusers from across a wide variety of applications. This all adds up to ensure that attendees of Military Radar 2008 will gain a unique understanding of advanced radar technology and its full spectrum of applications, which will undoubtedly provide a mission-critical advantage in future military operations.

To secure your place at the event and save up to € 400 today when you book and pay by Friday 27th June 2008, call +44 (0)207 368 9300, email enquire@defenceiq.com or fax a copy of the booking form on page 101 to +44 (0)207 368 9301.

EUMW delegates who wish to participate in sessions or workshops of Military Radar 2008 need to register at our registration desk or via the booking form on page 101 in advance.

For hotel reservations you are welcome to use the hotel reservation form in the centre pages of this conference programme book, or visit www.rai.nl/hotelservice. Remember to book hotel accommodation early, as hotel rooms may get scarce in the period.

We look forward to meeting you at EuMW2008 in October,

Military Radar Conference
Workshop Day: 27th October 2008

Registration required

Workshop A: 09:00 – 12:00: Emerging and Developing Radar Technologies

Facilitator to be confirmed – check out www.militaryradar2008.com for regular
agenda updates

Workshop B: 13:00 – 16:00: Synthetic Aperture Radar: Key Principles and Applications

Workshop facilitated by Professor Peter Hoogeboom, Senior Consultant on Radar Systems, TNO Defence, Security and Safety, IRCTR - Delft University of Technology and Chair EuMC

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) provides military forces with the invaluable possibility of an all-weather, day or night, reconnaissance and surveillance capability. SAR also has the potential to identify specific man-made targets and distinguish between specific terrain features. It is a critical addition to the sensor options of a military organisation and can fill several existing capability gaps.

This workshop will provide you with an in-depth understanding of SAR and its role for enhancing military performance. You will also gain specific details of the principles behind SAR, the advantages of the technology, its moving target capabilities, data processing and utilisation tools and future challenges. The opportunity to discuss this essential technology in an interactive forum with colleagues and peers from the worldwide radar community is not to be missed.

Discussion will feature several key topics including:

1) Principles of Synthetic Aperture Radar: How has this technology developed and how does it work compared to other available systems? Where has this technology already been used and how has it adapted over the years?

2) Capabilities of SAR Technology: Examine how SAR can be used for all-weather missions, foliage penetrating tasks, change detection and moving target indications. How can this mature technology adapt to cope with moving and concealed targets, paramilitary surveillance missions, building penetration and urban operations support?

3) Data Processing: SAR technology requires a great deal of data processing to make the gathered information truly valuable. What are some of the challenges and technology breakthroughs in this area?

4) Future Developments: How are SAR systems going to evolve over the coming years and what new capabilities will emerge?

Examining ongoing research in the target detection and recognition field.

Peter Hoogeboom has been working in Radar and Earth Observation for over 25 years at TNO in The Hague. Systems, algorithms and applications were developed by him and TNO’s Radar Group for both civil and military needs. He managed among other projects the development of the PHARUS experimental polarimetric phased array Synthetic Aperture Radar. He is currently senior advisor on Radar at TNO. He is one of the founders of the European SOSTAR Ground Surveillance program and was a member of the technical team for the TCAR radar in the NATO AGS programme. He is a part time professor in Radar Earth Observation at IRCTR- Delft University of Technology.
